For the 11th time in the past year, Palm Springs International Airport has accommodated the most passengers it ever has in a given month.
The airport’s passenger count in June was 142,524, a 9.7 percent increase compared with the previous record for June, which it set last year, according to a statement on the city’s website.
To date in 2022, March beat its previous record by 0.5 percent, April by 17.5 percent and May by 22.3 percent. All three former records were set in 2019.
“We continue to set records at a time we previously thought would still be below pre-pandemic levels,” said Harry Barrett, Palm Springs International’s executive director of aviation, in the statement. “By the late 2020, the data indicated a return to pre-pandemic numbers sometime in early 2023.
“Not only have we exceeded those numbers, but we’ve experienced an unexpected and unprecedented level of growth in the past year.”
The city-owned airport has added several new airlines and routes in the past year, which has put some strain on its terminals and other facilities. In response, officials at the city-owned airport are planning several upgrades, including improvements to circulation areas at gates on the Bono concourse and renovation-enlargement of the airport’s restrooms, according to the statement.
