Rate hike battles move online

Members of the Laborers’ International Union of North America and the International Union of Operating Engineers are taking their battle with Southern California Edison to the Internet.

Members of both unions are opposed to a proposed 12.9 percent rate hike over the next three years, an increase union members believe will leave SCE customers with some of the highest electricity rates in the United States while imposing a particularly strong burden on working families.

In addition to a recent series of meetings before the California Public Utilities Commission – the five-member panel that will approve or deny the proposed increase – union members have added an online petition to their website, www.stopedison.com.

The petition asks the CPUC to deny those hikes, while noting that SCE’s rates are already 40 percent above the national average.

The CPUC expects to make its decision later this year.
