A major home improvement store chain has agreed to settle a lawsuit that charged the company with improperly handling and disposing toxic waste at some of its California stores.
Lowe’s will pay $18.1 million to settle the matter, which was investigated by the Los Angeles County Districts Attorney’s Office and 31 other state district attorneys, according to multiple reports.
Investigators spent two years inspecting Lowe’s dumpsters and determined that the company often sent hazardous waste to landfills that were not permitted to handle the material.
The LA County District Attorney’s Office will receive $125,000 as part of the settlement, according to the report.
