Riverside County has adopted an $8.6 billion budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, which began July 1.
The budget approved by the board of supervisors on June 27 tops last year’s spending plan by $1 billion, a 15 percent increase, according to a statement on the county’s website.
The current budget is based on discretionary revenue of $1.1 billion, a 12.8 percent year-over-year increase. It includes $28.5 million for Riverside University Health Services’ hospital and health departments which is 28 percent of the budget.
Other highlights:
- $2 billion – 23 percent – for public safety;
- $1.9 billion – 22 percent – for human services;
- $982.6 million – 11.2 percent – for public works-community services.
County officials also plan to spend $5.3 million to open the San Jacinto Animal Shelter and improve animal services, $1 million to hire more code enforcement officers, $7 million to attract social workers to the Department of Public Social Services, and $245,000 to help reduce homelessness.
“Investing more in health, public safety, and human services translates to better access to healthcare, safer communities, and better living conditions for our residents,” said Board Chair Kevin Jeffries in the statement.
