Riverside County ponders 15 percent budget hike

Riverside County will consider a 15 percent increase in its budget for the 2023-’24 fiscal year, which will start July 1.

The county’s preliminary budget, which the Board of Supervisors discussed earlier this month, recommends spending $8.6 billion on “vitals services” during the next 12 months, according to a statement on the county’s website.

“This budget reflects investments in many of our most needed areas, said Kevin Jeffries, first district supervisor, and board chair, in the statement. “It increases firefighter capacity and [adds]  more after-hours teams for the enforcement of short-term rentals to ensure  property rights.”

The proposed budget also expands the county’s integrated social services pilot program to 22, which will help more residents in need, Jeffries added.

Board members have approved several budget items, including $3.4 million to open the San Jacinto Animal Shelter, $2.1 million for more support staff in the District Attorney’s office and  $2 million to  to increase firefighter staffing in high-risk areas.

The budget is scheduled to be voted on June 27.
