A former Army building that Riverside transformed into a community for veterans and their families will be recognized next month by the State of California.
Home Front at Camp Anza, a former officer’s club at 5797 Picker St., will be presented with the 2016 Governor’s Historic Preservation Award Nov. 10 during a ceremony in Sacramento, according to a statement on the city’s website.
The restored 1942 Officers Club, which is in the Arlanza section of Riverside, is surrounded by 30 affordable residential units that were once military bungalows.
Home Front at Camp Anza cost approximately $14 million to restore, with funding coming from a variety of sources. It’s eligible to be listed on the California Register of Historical Resources and the National Register of Historic Places.
The project was originally part of Camp Anza, a World War II staging area for the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation that processed more than 625,000 troops to and from the Pacific Theater. Some Italian prisoners of war were also processed there.
“Home Front at Camp Anza is an incredible example of how we are better together in Riverside,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said in the statement. “So many people, agencies and groups came together to make this happen for our veterans – it’s a best practice for the rest of the country.”
