Riverside is scheduled to hold a groundbreaking ceremony Jan. 9 at the future site of the Northside Agriculture Innovation Center.
That facility, which will cover 8.8 acres in the Northside neighborhood, will use solar panels on top of farming fields, and solar PV greenhouses, to create an agricultural system that will resist climate change, according to a statement on the city’s website.
PV refers to photovoltaic, a technology that converts sunlight into electricity.
“Riverside has a deep agricultural history as the birthplace of the citrus industry,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the statement. “The Northside Agriculture Innovation Center is an opportunity to show the same level of leadership on agricultural issues into the coming century.”
Riverside has already secured nearly $10 million in funding for the public-private project. That money will be spent on developing the site, amenities, and workforce training.
The groundbreaking will start the project’s first phase, which will include installation of approximately 50,000 square feet of solar PV greenhouses, among other components.
The ceremony is schedule to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at 900 N. Clark St. To attend visit https://naicceremony.eventbrite.com.
