The San Bernardino City Council today might ask the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department if it’s interested in providing police protection to the city.
The council’s vote comes almost two years after it first asked the department what it would cost to provide police service in San Bernardino, according to a report in the San Bernardino County Sun.
That request was made several months after the city filed for bankruptcy. It would have cost San Bernardino $53 million to make the change, compared with the $54 million it spent on its own police department at the time, but with fewer services from the sheriff’s department, according to the report.
Ultimately, the council shelve the proposal in January 2013.
The city’s police budget this year is $56 million. San Bernardino’s bankruptcy case, now in its third year, is still making its way through the courts, and the city has recently elected a new mayor and several new council members.
City voters also rejected Measure Q, which would have required $1.3 million in mandatory raises this year and possible future raises after that, according to the report.
