Gary McBride has been named San Bernardino County’s chief executive officer.
McBride, a 23-year county employee and the county’s chief financial officer, will assume his new duties Nov 25, according to a statement.
Dena M. Smith has served as interim chief executive officer for the past seven months following the retirement of Greg Devereaux. Smith, who plans to retire shortly and was never a candidate to replace Devereaux permanently, will assist McBride with the transition, according to the statement.
The Board of Supervisors spent seven months interviewing potential candidates before settling on McBride.
The chief executive officer works with the board to develop procedures and policies and makes certain those policies are carried it out. It’s the top non-elected position in the county, according to the statement.
