San Bernardino has received a state grant that it will use to upgrade the broadband equipment at its main and three branch libraries.
The new hardware at the Norman F. Feldheym Central Library will create data speeds of one gigabit per second, a “significant increase” compared with the system’s current ability, according to a statement on the city’s website.
Columbia Telecommunications will install and maintain the system.
Feldheym, at 555 W. 6th St, is the internet hub for San Bernardino’s four libraries.
Combined, those facilities offer 62 personal computers for public use and free Wi-Fi. That gives residents without internet service at home access to the internet.
The grant is from the California Library Connect Program. Since its founding eight years ago, California Connect – originally called High-Speed Broadband in California Public Libraries – has upgraded more than 90 percent of its public library territories, according to the statement.
