San Bernardino has reached an agreement with its fire department union that will allow for the department to come under the control of San Bernardino County.
The settlement, which ends years of battles between the city and the union, was reached Monday during a closed session of the city council, according to statement released by the city.
Details of the compact are expected to be released Feb. 1, when the council will likely formally approve the matter.
The agreement, which must also be approved by the Local Agency Formation Commission, a county agency, will save the city between $7 million and $8 million. That will make it easier for the city to pay for other public services and to get out from under its bankruptcy filing of four years ago, San Bernardino spokeswoman Monica Lagos said.
