San Bernardino has approved a half-mile extension of State Street between Baseline and 16th streets, a move 20 years in the making.
The city council recently awarded a $7.4 million contract to Riverside Construction Co. to build a four-lane roadway that will include medians, sidewalks and storm drains, according to a statement on the city’s website.
The project site is parallel to Lytle Creek Basin immediately south of the Foothill Freeway. When completed, the upgrades will improve access to the freeway, cut neighborhood traffic and make it easier to get to Arroyo Valley High School and Anne Shirrells Park.
“The West Side residents of San Bernardino have been waiting for this for a long time,” said council member Kimberly Calvin in the statement. “Our patience is being rewarded with a new street that will serve as a major arterial for the entire area and [help provide] more economic development opportunities.”
Calvin represents Ward 6, where the project is located.
Construction is expected to start next month and be completed by June. San Bernardino will use regional funds to pay for the construction, according to the statement.
