San Bernardino held its final public hearing Thursday on five proposed amendments to its city charter.
One of those changes would include eliminating the guarantee that pay for police and firefighters be set at the average of 10 cities with populations between 100,000 and 250,000, according to a report in the San Bernardino County Sun.
Both entities oppose doing away with that standard, saying it would eliminate competitive wages and thus make it difficult to hire and retain police and firefighters, according to the report.
The council is scheduled to vote Aug. 7 on whether to put those proposed changes on the ballot.
State law requires a city council to hold a series of public meetings before it decides whether to put any changes to its charter before voters, and it may not take that action until three weeks after the last meeting.
