SB County takes first redistricting steps

San Bernardino County has started its 10-year redistricting effort with the launch of an interactive website and the first meeting of its redistricting commission.

The website, sbcountyredistricing.com, has information about the redistricting process, upcoming meetings, archived meetings and the latest information on redistricting, according to a statement on the county’s website.

Residents may also post questions on the site regarding redistricting.

“The board of supervisors is looking forward to utilizing the latest technology and in-person meetings throughout the county to involve every county resident and each of our communities in the 2021 redistricting process,” said Chairman Curt Hagman in the statement.

Every 10 years, when the latest U.S. Census data is released, counties are required to redraw their district boundaries to make sure each has close to the same number of residents. New districts comply with the Voting Rights Act, along with other regulations.

The census data is scheduled to be released this fall. The seven-member redistricting commission was scheduled to hold its first meeting May 11.
