Amazon will open a second fulfillment center in San Bernardino.
The 1.1 million-square-foot operation, which is expected to create more than 1,000 full-time jobs, will be the company’s seventh fulfillment center in California, according to a statement released Wednesday.
Amazon opened its first California fulfillment center in San Bernardino four years ago. More than 12,000 people work at those facilities, four of which are located in the Inland Empire, according to the statement.
San Bernardino officials praised the announcement.
“We are pleased with Amazon’s decision to expand their business operations in the City of San Bernardino,” said Cruz Esparza, San Bernardino’s economic development manager, in a statement. “Along with creating additional job opportunities, Amazon will continue to have a positive impact on the surrounding businesses, such as restaurants, gas stations and professional services.”
Amazon is currently moving into the building at 555 Orange Show Road. The structure was developed by Hillwood, the Dallas-based commercial and industrial developer that is converging the former Norton Air Force Base to civilian use.
Hillwood will lease the building, which is located about one-quarter of mile from Amazon’s existing facility, said John Magness, Hillwood’s senior vice president on the West Coast.
Terms of the lease were not released. The building is expected to be fully operational by this summer, Magness said.
