A second citrus tree in Riverside has tested positive for citrus greening.
The backyard tree was diagnosed Monday by state and federal agricultural officials, according to a statement on the city’s website.
Citrus greening, known as huanglongbing, or HBL, is a fatal disease that can be transmitted from one tree to another by the Asian citrus psyllid, a sap-sucking bug.
The bacterial disease, which is no threat to humans or animals, attacks a tree’s vascular system. Once infected, a tree usually dies in less than three years, according to the statement.
The first infected tree was found in a residential neighborhood near Chicago and Marlborough avenues. The second infected tree was on a property directly behind that site.
County, state and federal officials will continue to survey and treat trees in that area, according to the statement.
