National retail sales ended September on a strong note.
Sales were up 3.6 percent year-over-year for the week that ended Saturday, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Index, which was released Tuesday.
Sales were down 0.2 percent from the previous week.
Business was brisk in several retail segments despite unfavorable weather in some parts of the country, said Michael Niemira, a research consultant with the New York-based council.
Business was “very strong” at wholesale clubs, dollar stores, electronic stores, clothing stores and discount houses, but not as strong online stores or at grocery or office supply stores, Niemira said in a statement.
Sales for September are expected to be up four to five percent compared to September 2013.
