The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has received a $1 million grant that will pay for traffic safety programs and more community patrols.
The money was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety and will be administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to a statement on the county’s website.
“This grant funding allows us to support our ongoing traffic safety efforts in the community,” Deputy Dustin Whitson said in the statement. “Our intent is to stop the most unlawful and dangerous behaviors that put people at risk, and create an environment where everyone feels safe traveling.
The funds will pay for driving-under-the-influence checkpoints, and identifying drivers who violate hands-free cell phone laws. It will also help identify driving practices that most often cause crashes, including speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.
