Southwest Airlines to begin Palm Springs flights

Southwest Airlines will soon offer year-round service to Palm Springs International Airport.

Destination and schedule for the non-stop service will be announced soon, with flights expected to begin later this year, according to a statement posted on the airline’s website.

Dallas-based Southwest also announced it will start non-stop flights to Miami International Airport by the end of 2020. Both routes are subject to governmental approval.

“Palm Springs is a great California destination,” said Gary Kelly, Southwest’s president and chief executive officer, said in the statement. “Southwest has long carried more customers to and from, and within [California]  than any other airline.

“Our service to both of these airports will bring new, relevant options for our core customers.”

Tourism officials in Palm Springs have been working for several years to bring Southwest Airlines to the Coachella Valley, according to City Manager David H. Ready.

“The addition of Southwest Airlines to Palm Springs International Airport is fantastic news,” Ready said. “It will have a positive impact on Palm Springs businesses, residents, visitors, and the entire Coachella Valley as we all work to recover from the COVID- 19 pandemic.”
