Spending of HUD Grants to be Discussed

Victorville and Apple Valley will host public meetings next month regarding the spending of federal community development block grant funds.

The grants, which are distributed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, are used by state and local governments to pay for social programs and community upgrades, according to the department’s website.

The meetings will determine how both High Desert municipalities will spend those grants between 2017 and 2021, said Liliana Collins, management specialist with Victorville’s economic development department.

“The issues vary from year to year,” Collins said. “In the past we used to hear a lot about housing, now we’re hearing about youth services.”

Victorville is scheduled to receive an estimated $1.4 million from the federal agency next month, Collins said.

Apple Valley’s figure was not available.

Both towns are putting together five-year plans that each will submit to the federal agency detailing how they plan to spend the grants, Collins said.

Victorville will hold its meeting from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 28 at Victorville City Hall, 14343 Civic Drive. Apple Valley will meet from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Town of Apple Valley Conference Center, 14975 Dale Evans Parkway.

Attendees will be asked to fill out a survey. Those surveys can be accessed at victorvilleca.gov. and at applevalley.org.
