State Adds Jobs, Unemployment Rate Drops

Employers in California added 15,200 workers to their payrolls during May, according to data released Friday by state Employment Development Department.

Overall, the state’s unemployment rate stood at 5.2 percent at the end of last month, a solid number but above the national rate of 4.7 percent, the department reported in its monthly analysis of the state’s job market.

That was a mild gain compared with April, when 70,000 jobs – revised from 59,600 jobs – were added.

An estimated 9,000 state residents dropped out of the job market during May, according to the report.
