State allows some to postpone property tax payments

California residents who have been hurt financially by COVID-19 may be allowed to defer their property tax payments.

Under the Property Tax Postponement Program, homeowners 62 years old or older and taxpayers with a disability may be allowed to defer their 2021 property tax payments on their principal residence, according to a statement.

There are several requirements, including having at least 40 percent equity in the home and an annual household income of $45,000 or less.

“This pandemic has caused significant economic hardships for so many of our residents,” said Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collector Matt Jennings in a statement. “Some of our most vulnerable residents, seniors and disabled homeowners on limited incomes, may be eligible for this state program to postpone their taxes.”

Deadline to apply is Feb. 10.  Applications and program details are available at the State Controller’s website or by calling (800) 952-5661.
