California recorded a 4.7 percent unemployment rate in September, essentially unchanged from the previous month and up only 0.7 percent year-over-year, according to data released Friday.
Eight thousand seven hundred non-agricultural jobs were added to the state’s economy last month, bringing the total to 436,400 the number of jobs added in that category since February 2020, the month before the pandemic, the state Employment Development Department reported.
“Since the current economic expansion began in April 2020, California has gained 3,191,000 jobs, which averages out to a gain of 77,829 jobs per month,” the development department’s monthly report states.
California’s unemployment rate remains above the national rate, 3.8 percent.
Five of California’s 11 major industries added jobs in September, starting with private education and health services, which grew by 18,200 jobs. Leisure and hospitality (11,300), trade, transportation and utilities (2,400), construction (2,200), and government (300), also expanded their workforces.
Professional and business services (-10,900) recorded the most losses.
Employers in Riverside and San Bernardino counties added 5,900 jobs non-farming jobs in September, a 0.4 percent compared with August, the development department reported.
