Californians cut their water use by 22 percent in December, thanks in part to some much-needed rain throughout the state.
Gov. Brown called for a 20 percent reduction in water use after declaring a drought emergency late last year, and state residents are apparently getting the message: per capita use was cut in half during the last six months of 2014, according to an Associated Press report.
Californians used an average of 67 gallons of water per person per day in December, down from 140 gallons per person in June, the report stated.
While that is encouraging news, the state is by no means finished with the drought, which is now beginning its fourth year. The snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains, which accounts for about one-third of the state’s water supply, is almost 90 percent below normal, the report stated.
