California residents reduced their water use by 28 percent in May compared with May 2013, according to data released this week.
Local water suppliers throughout the state have saved 1.6 million acre feet during the 12 months since the state imposed mandatory water restrictions, enough water to supply eight million people for one year, the State Water Resources Control Board announced its monthly report on state water consumption.
New regulations that took effect last month allow water suppliers more leeway in determining their own conservation goals. However, the water board expects conservation to remain a top priority, as 60 percent of California remains in severe or extreme drought, the report stated.
