A record 200.4 million people went shopping during the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, topping last year’s record of 196.7 million shoppers, according to data released this week.
This year’s turnout exceeded expectations by more than 18 million shoppers, the National Retail Federation in Washington, D.C. reported.
“The five-day period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday represents some of the busiest shopping days of the year and reflects the continued resilience of consumers and strength of the economy,” said Matthew Shay, the association’s president and chief executive officer, in the statement. “Shoppers exceeded our expectations with a robust turnout.”
Consumers shopped in stores and online.
One hundred and twenty-one point four million people visited a brick-and-mortar retailer, while 134.2 million made purchases online, the federation reported.
