Thornton to receive award

Moreno Valley Councilwoman Carla J. Thornton will be honored by the Congressional Research Institute for Social Work and Policy this month.

Thornton will receive the organization’s Outstanding Individual in Government Award for her combined work as a social worker, local elected official and a faculty member at California Baptist University, according to a statement.

“My social-work background informs my work as a member of the city council and vice versa,” Thornton said in the statement. “Government should work for the people — all people — and that’s what social work is all about.

“I’m deeply honored to receive this award.”

Thornton is schedule to receive the award March 11 in Washington, D.C., according to the statement.
