Murrieta, Fontana and Menifee have been ranked among the 20 safest cities in California by SafeWise magazine.
The Inland Empire cities were ranked 16th, 17th and 18th respectively by the home and community safety publication. No other city in Riverside or San Bernardino counties made the list, which was based on FBI crime data.
Rankings were determined by the percentage of violent and property crimes per 1,000 people in each jurisdiction. Rancho Santa Margarita, rated the safest city in California, had a violent crime rate of 0.4 and a property crime rate of 4.8 incidents per 1,000 people.
Seventy-seven cities met the criteria needed to be ranked. All of the ranked cities reported fewer than 3 violent crimes per 1,000 people.
Aliso Viejo, Yorba Linda, Laguna Niguel and Mission Viejo made up the rest of the top five. SafeWise conducted an online survey in January 2023, and published the results in March of this year.
