Threshold Aviation Group in Chino will welcome a Boeing CH-47D Chinook helicopter next month, where it will be refurbished and retrofitted so it can be used to fight fires.
The military aircraft can transport 30 to 40 people and is one of the world’s largest helicopters, said Doug Crowther, Threshold’s director of business development.
Made by Boeing, the helicopter is scheduled to be moved July 8 from Long Beach to Threshold’s fixed-base operation at Chino Airport. It will spend about one week in Hangar Four, where it will be worked on by Columbia employees.
After that, the helicopter will be handed over to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, the agency responsible for fire protection throughout much of the state, Crowther said.
Threshold Aviation is one of the largest aircraft maintenance businesses in the United States. It has more than 150,000 square feet of hangar and office space at Chino Airport, according to the company’s website.
