Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday morning at 9:30 on AM590

Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday morning at 9:30 on AM590 with host Ed Hoffman as he discusses national, regional and local current events, as well as trends in the local real estate market. Ed delivers intelligent radio with unique, witty and irreverent flair.

This week, Ed analyzes the annual State of the Union assembly that took place Tuesday. Like most thinking Americans, you may have heard the speech by now; regardless, it’s important to continue pointing out the fallacies in the President’s address. Tune into the show this week to hear Ed offer a response to these portions of the State of the Union:

“More of our kids are graduating than ever before.” Yes, but they can’t get a job – so what’s the point? And now that he wants the first two years of college to be free, taxpayers will foot the bill for college degrees that don’t even matter.
“We are as free from the grip of foreign oil as we’ve been in almost 30 years.” No thanks to you, Mr. President. He advised us six years ago to put more air in our tires; if we had gone full speed on drilling on our own land six years ago, we would have been there faster.
“Tonight, for the first time since 9/11, our combat mission in Afghanistan is over…the shadow of crisis is passed.” What bubble does he live in? If we close Guantanamo Bay, as he has pledged to do numerous times, the shadow of crisis will be scattered throughout the entire backyard of America.
“Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well?” Guess what? That’s how the economy is supposed to work. Not everybody wants to put in the commitment it takes to do spectacularly well. It’s a question of wanting to strive to do better, and that’s what’s always made America great. What if Steve Jobs had stopped at his first computer? Aren’t we glad he didn’t?
“And to everyone in this Congress who still refuses to raise the minimum wage, I say this: If you truly believe you could work full-time and support a family on less than $15,000 a year, go try it.” Does anyone honestly believe minimum wage jobs are supposed to support an entire family? Minimum wage jobs are for teenagers. When you grow up, you move up. You don’t work at McDonald’s anymore. You acquire the skills to better yourself, because that’s what it means to be a responsible adult in America.
“That’s what middle-class economics is: the idea that this country does best when everyone gets their fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules…middle-class economics means helping working families feel more secure in a world of constant change.” Is “middle class economics” some kind of new term he’s trying to coin? If we base our entire economy solely on the needs of the middle class, no one will have a job because the middle class is not made up of employers. It has to start at the top, because guess what: That’s where the money comes from!
If you wonder how the President believes his goals will be achieved without moving over to full-blown socialism – and, you believe that’s exactly what his true agenda is – tune in to The Main Event this week on AM590 to hear more of Ed’s thoughts on the State of the Union.
