Barry C. Barish, a professor of physics and astronomy at UC Riverside, has been awarded the National Medal of Science by President Joe Biden.
Barish was recognized for his research on sub-atomic particles, and for work that led to the first detection of gravitational waves from merging black holes, according to a statement on UC Riverside’s website.
The latter research confirmed part of Einstein’s theory of relativity.
“UC Riverside congratulates Professor Barish on receiving the National Medal of Science,” said Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox in the statement. “The distinguished names of previous winners make this recognition very exceptional. Professor Barish is a strong inspiration for our students, researchers, and faculty.”
Barish joined the UC Riverside faculty in 2018, one year after he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering gravitational waves.
