UC Riverside has been named one of the top 50 green colleges in the United States.
The school ranked 16th among public universities and 48th nationally for providing “a healthy, sustainable quality of life” for students, faculty, and staff, according to a statement on the university’s website.
The rankings were compiled by Princeton Review, a college admission and test-preparation company in New York. In addition to the quality of life, rankings were based on a university’s environmental policies and how well it prepares students for green jobs.
“This recognition shows the progress that UC Riverside has made in relation to sustainability initiatives on campus,” said Fortino Morales, the university’s sustainability officer, in the statement. “It’s important to note that they require the passion and effort of the entire campus to achieve, from students concerned about climate change, to staff who are working every day to make the campus better, and to faculty who share their knowledge and insights.”
UC Riverside’s recent green projects include installing nearly 10,000 solar panels on campus parking lots and securing a LEED Platinum designation for its Multidisciplinary Research Building, which opened in January.
LEED is a “green-building” ranking system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. It’s used worldwide, and platinum is its highest ranking.
