UCR begins medical school expansion

Construction has begun on UC Riverside’s second medical school building.

University and community leaders participated in a groundbreaking recently on the east side of campus, south of the existing School of Medicine Education.

The new building will accommodate more students and, officials hope, provide more physicians in the Inland Empire, which is badly underserved in that regard. The current class size of 125 is expected to grow by 80 to 125 students.

“This building will provide the much-needed space for our medical students, faculty, and staff, and it provides a path for the expansion our medical school class,” said Dr. Deborah Deas, the Mark and Pam Rubin Dean of the UCR School of Medicine, in the statement.

The five-story School of Medicine’s Education Building II will cover 90,000 square feet. It’s the largest expansion of the medical school since it opened in 2013.

The University of California Regents in March approved the project, which will reportedly cost $84 million.

Construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023, according to the statement.
