UC Riverside’s business school has begun offering a degree in actuarial science, a discipline in which mathematics and statistics are used to analyze a company’s financial risks.
That major, which the school began offering this semester, is meant for students pursuing a career in finance and insurance, according to a statement posted Monday on the university’s website.
Only two other UC schools – UCLA and UC Santa Barbara – have an actuarial science program. UC Riverside is the only UC campus to offer that program through its business school.
“This is a track that is really going to help students who know this is the field they want to be in,” said said Jennifer Osborne, the business schools director of undergraduate business programs, in the statement.
The four-year program has seven first-year students and three third-year students, all of whom must take multiple courses in mathematics, statistics, business and finance. Students with a strong background in those areas are expected to enroll in the program, which is not expected to be large.
