UC Riverside has received a $126 million state grant that school officials hope will build a 1,500-bed on-campus student residence complex.
The project, which will need another $220 million in borrowed revenue to be built, is scheduled to be voted on by the UC Board of Regents in September, according to a statement on UC Riverside’s website.
If approved, the project will be developed with the Riverside Community College District. It will allow community college students a chance to live on a four-year campus.
“With the current shortage of transfer students and us having three community colleges in proximity to UC Riverside, we see this joint project as a great way to help both educational systems increase access to student housing and boost the transfer pipeline,” said Heidi Scribner, the university’s associate vice chancellor of auxiliary services, in the statement.
The project will be part of the North District development, which has already brought two residence halls – one five-story, one six-story – to the campus, according to the statement.
