UCR opens campus COVID-19 test site

UC Riverside students and employees may now get tested for COVID-19 on campus.

The university has set up a diagnostic lab in the Multidisciplinary Research Building that can conduct about 600 tests a day, with results available within 24 hours, according to a statement on the university’s website.

Researchers from the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences put the lab together after borrowing equipment from colleagues and creating testing kits.

“It’s one additional and important measure among all the others in place to mitigate the effects of the pandemic,” said Rodolfo Torres, vice chancellor for research and economic development,  in the statement.

All students who live on campus must be tested before they move in.

The lab conducted its first test in August and formally opened in September. Recently, it has switched from nasal swabs to saliva tests, which allows for more tests and quicker results, according to the statement.
