Jeffrey A. Van Wagenen Jr. has been named Riverside County chief executive officer.
A 14-year county employee, Van Wagenen spent the last three years as assistant chief executive officer for seven public safety departments, according to a statement on the city’s website.
Van Wagenen owned and operated a criminal law office for 10 years before working for Riverside County.
“After doing a competitive, nationwide recruitment, I am pleased that one of our Riverside County residents will be our next chief executive officer,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Karen Spiegel in the statement. “Jeff has been a driving force within the county and built a strong reputation for collaborative solutions to tough problems.”
The chief executive officer carries out policies set by the board, is in charge of more than 40 departments with 22,000-plus employees and oversees a yearly budget of more than $6 billion, according to the statement.
“The hard work of the county is done in our departments everyday by our dedicated staff,” said Van Wagenen. “I am honored to serve the board of supervisors on behalf of the 2.5 million people who choose to call Riverside County home.”
