Workers’ comp report released

Most of California’s workers compensation claims that involved cumulative trauma between 2005 and 2013 were filed in the Inland Empire-Orange County-Los Angeles County region, according to a study recently released.

Thirty five point six percent of the claims that did not involve cumulative trauma occurred in one of those three locations during that time, according to the report by the nonprofit California Workers’ Compensation Institute in Oakland.

Cumulative trauma is defined as physical or mental injuries that happen over time from repetitive stress, motion or exposures rather than from a specific accident or event. The report was based on 41,000 cumulative trauma cases and 608,000 noncumulative trauma cases filed during that nine-year period.

Besides having happened in the greater Los Angeles area, most of the cumulative trauma cases occurred in manufacturing jobs. They also had twice the level of attorney involvement and had 53 percent higher claim costs, on average, than non-cumulative trauma cases, according to the report.
