Heat puts mild dent in fair attendance

More than 1.2 million people attended the Los Angeles County Fair this year, a solid showing although attendance was down slightly compared with 2016.

The fair, which ended its 19-day run Sunday, was probably hurt by the heatwave that hit the Southland in early September, according to a statement released Monday by Fairplex.

Fortunately, high temperatures were only a factor during the fair’s first few days. Once things cooled off, the fair went on to draw 1,231,243 guests.

“We ended really strong,” Miguel A. Santana, Fairplex’s president and chief executive officer, said in the statement. “The last six days saw higher attendance than 2016 by an average of 11 percent.”

The fair’s End of Summer Concert Series – which included Chicago, Migos, Trace Adkins and Patti LaBelle – sold a record number of tickets, and fair patrons also donated more than $50,000 to the America Red Cross for hurricane and earthquake victims.

They also gave, in exchange for free admission, nearly 5,000 pints of blood to local blood banks and 89,000 cans of non-perishable food to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, according to the statement.
