State jobless rate drops

California’s unemployment picture, and the Inland Empire’s, continued to improve last month.

The state’s unemployment rate dropped to 6.5 percent in March, down from 7.9 percent exactly one year earlier, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Employers in the public and private sector added 39,800 non-agricultural jobs during the third month of 2015, bringing to 15.9 million the number of non-agricultural jobs in the state. California has now added more than 1.8 million jobs since the recovery began in February 2010, the development department stated.

Despite its improvement, California still lagged behind the country as a whole: the U.S. unemployment rate in March was 5.5 percent.

The Inland region’s jobless rate has improved considerably during the past year.

Riverside County recorded a 6.6 percent jobless rate in March, down from 8.9 percent in March 2014, while San Bernardino County recorded a 6.4 percent jobless rate last month, a 9.3 percent year-over-year drop, according to the development department.
