Women leaders to receive awards

Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce will host the 31st annual Athena Awards Holiday Gala.

The event, which recognizes five women for their outstanding business and community leadership, is scheduled to be be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Renaissance Palm Springs, 888 Tahquitz Canyon Way.

A champagne reception and fashion show are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., with the luncheon to begin at noon.

This years honorees are former U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer; Donna MacMillan, the Palm Springs Art Museum’s chairwoman of the board; Karen Devine, news anchor with KESQ-TV;  Betty Wolf, senior vice president of development for the McCallum Theatre and the former foundation head at Eisenhower Medical Center and Dr. Suzanne Quardt, one of the Coachella Valley’s leading plastic surgeons and a supporter of various local charities.

“This group of extraordinary women exemplify the highest level of professional achievement when it comes to serving as role models, breaking the glass ceiling and leading the way for current and future generations of women leaders in the Coachella Valley,” said Nona Watson, the chamber’s chief executive officer, in the statement.
