The Riverside County Transportation Commission has received a $25 million federal grant it will use to help build the 91 Eastbound Corridor Operations Project.
That project will include a three-mile, no-toll auxiliary lane on the eastbound 91 Freeway between the State Route 241 connector and the 71 Freeway near Green River Road, according to a statement on the commission’s website.
In addition, two bridges will be widened, retaining walls will be built, overhead signs will be replaced, and a two-lane exit ramp will be built at Green River Road.
Construction is expected to cost nearly $180 million.
“With more than 300,000 vehicles traveling the 91 Freeway between Riverside and Orange counties each day, continued investment in the corridor is needed to keep our communities moving,” said Commission Chair Raymond Gregory.”
The commission is developing the project along with California Department of Transportation and the Orange County Transportation Commission.
The grant is from U.S. Department of Transportation. Construction is expected to start in 2028 and be completed in late 2029.
