San Bernardino has approved a $107 million public improvements program for infrastructure upgrades and other projects, the largest such project undertaken by the city in years.
Improvements will include replacing 200 street lights with energy efficient LED lights, new asphalt vehicles and pickup trucks for maintenance crews and slurry seal projects citywide to improve roads, according to a statement.
Also, intersection traffic signals will be upgraded and dead trees on city-owned property will be removed and replaced with drought-tolerant landscaping.
All work will be done by the public works department and will take five years to complete. Workers have already started on $55 million worth of improvements, $9 million of which was made available after July 1.
“We are finally in the position to strategically address the infrastructure needs of the city,” Mayor Carey R. Davis said in the statement. “We are committed to ensuring that these projects continue to be funded, staffed, overseen and completed for the continued progression of our community.”
San Bernardino is also conducting an assessment of the 176 facilities it owns and maintains to determine if each should be maintained, restored or sold, according to the statement.
