Riverside has clarified its public safety measures required of workers at essential businesses in the fight against COVID-19.
Council members passed a resolution recently “because grocery stores, farmers markets and pharmacy retail stores have remained open with few mandated restrictions,” according to a statement on the city’s website.
The statement noted that fear of food shortages have caused people to crowd into stores, putting workers and the public at greater risk of contracting the virus.
The resolution, which mentions grocery stores and pharmacies specifically, reminds those and other establishments that Riverside’s public safety regulations include limiting occupancy to 50 percent, enforcing social distancing with floor markings six feet apart, providing medical face masks and gloves for employees at the owner’s expense, installing plexiglass shields at all points of sale wherever possible and informing employees of precautions that will be taken when an employee tests positive for COVID-19.
Riverside County has the second-highest rate of COVID-19 infections among California counties. Within the county, Riverside has the most infections, with 571, and the most deaths, with 21, according to the statement.
