Classes will highlight careers in aviation

Some local high school upperclassmen will soon be able to sign up for classes that will introduce them to a possible aviation career.

Aviation Careers Pathway is an eight-week course that will be provided on consecutive Saturdays, starting April 23 and ending June 11.

The program is free and open to all high school juniors and seniors who live in Ontario. It’s being sponsored by Ontario, the airports and Mt. San Antonio College, which has an aviation program.

Classes will cover all job categories in commercial aviation.

“Aviation careers are among the fastest-growing professions in the U.S., offering good pay and strong upward mobility,” said Councilwoman Debra Porada, who came up with the program along with Mayor Pro Tem Alan Wapner. “The fact that we’ve got a great international airport right here in our city makes this a great opportunity for Ontario and our young people.”

The number of commercial airline pilots is expected to increase by 13 percent from 2020-2030, well above the projected 7.7 percent average growth rate expected for all other jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Students can sign up for AERO 98 at www.MtSAC.edu. For more information, contact Robert Rogus at (909) 274-5006 or [email protected].
