Pow wow to return to Pechanga

After an eight-year absence, the Pechanga Band of Mission Indians will host its pow wow next month.

The event is scheduled to be held Jan. 6-8 in the Summit Events Center at the Pechanga Resort Casino, according to a tribal statement.

Thousands of spectators and tribal participants are expected to attend the celebration of Native American culture, which will start with a free fireworks show on Friday.  The next three days will include singing, dancing, food and arts and crafts.

“We are excited to bring back our pow wow,” said Andrew Masiel, Sr., president of the Pechanga Development Corp., in the statement. “Our pow wow will be … one of the best places on the west coast you can bring your family to experience real American Indian dancers and drum groups.”

Starting in 2015, the pow wow was put on hiatus because of the casino-resort’s $300 million restoration and expansion. The pandemic prevented it from being held last year and in 2020.

This will be the first time the pow-wow will be held indoors.
