UC Riverside has received a $1.4 million grant from the University of California Administration that will be used to find ways to clean and reuse water for agriculture.
The grant was presented recently to Professor Haizhou Liu, who teaches environmental engineering at UC Riverside, and a research team that will assist him in the project, according to a statement on UC Riverside’s website.
The research team will be made up of individuals from several UC campuses.
“Water scarcity is one of the most pressing challenges in agriculture today,” said Lui, who teaches in the Bourns College of Engineering, in the statement. “Our project not only aims to improve water use efficiency, but also to improve food safety, protect public health, and ensure a sustainable agricultural future.”
The research team will look for ways to remove chemical pollutants and pathogens, which can hinder crop growth, from wastewater, according to the statement.
