Back-to-school shopping starts early

U.S. consumers are getting a jump on their back-to-school shopping.

Sixty two percent began looking for school-related items in early July, down five percent from last year but above the 55 percent of 2024, according to the National Retail Federation.

Some consumers are delaying purchases until later in the summer, or spreading out their purchases so they can better manage their budgets.

Forty six percent of those who have not made half of their back-to-school purchases say they’re waiting for better discounts, while 23 percent say they’re spreading out their purchases to ease the pressure on their budgets.

“Affordability is a concern for families as we enter the back-to-school season,” said Mark Mathews, the federation’s chief economist and executive director, in at statement.  “Shoppers are keeping value front and center, and retailers are responding with an assortment of products, promotional events and more convenient shopping options.
