Sanchez named Cathedral City police chief

Rick Sanchez has been named Cathedral City’s chief of police.

A 20-year department veteran, Sanchez has been acting chief since December, when former Chief George Crum retired, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Sanchez is the first Latino to lead the department, which formed shortly after Cathedral City incorporated in 1984.

“We conducted an extensive search, and what became clear throughout that process is that the leader our community was looking for had been part of our team all along,” City Manager Andrew Firestine said in the statement.

Since joining the department in 2006, Sanchez has served in the department’s Patrol, Graffiti/Gangs unit, worked as a field training officer, and spent 13 years with the Desert Regional SWAT. As deputy chief, his most recent position, he oversaw the department’s Operations, Investigation, and Support Bureaus, according to the statement.
