Halloween spending expected to rise slightly

U.S. consumers are expected to spend $13.5 billion on Halloween this year, topping last year’s record spending by $400,000 if that prediction holds true, according to the National Retail Federation.

“Consumers continue to make Halloween a spending priority, but they are also approaching the season with affordability in mind,” said Allison Zeller, the federation’s vice president of industry and consumer insights, in the statement, “This year’s (survey) results show that shoppers are being thoughtful and strategic, and are looking for ways to maximize value throughout the season.”

Seventy four percent of those surveyed said they plan to celebrate Halloween this year, essentially the same as last year.

Activities will include handing out candy (61 percent), dressing in costume (50 percent), decorating their home or yard (42 percent) ) carving pumpkins (42 percent) and watching scary movies (42 percent).

Consumers are expected to spend an average of $115.14 per person this year, within one dollar of last year’s Halloween spending, the federation reported.
